Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Icehotel
Every winter the hotel is cut from blocks of ice drawn from the Torne River. Every spring it melts back into the same water.
Jukkasjärvi lies above the Arctic Circle, a short drive from Kiruna. The first ice structure went up here in 1989, and the idea grew into a full hotel.
Artists from many countries are invited each season to design individual suites, so no two winters look alike. A permanent wing, kept frozen by solar-powered cooling, lets guests sleep on ice in summer too.
Nights in the ice rooms are spent in thermal sleeping bags at below-zero temperatures. Warm cabins and hotel rooms nearby give guests a heated base for the rest of the stay.
